Teaching Others About Type 2 Diabetes

Posted by Jeanie Sturgeon on Mar 16, 2020 8:00:00 AM

When people first hear the words “Type 2 diabetes” from their doctor it can cause them to feel scared or worried about how they will cope with their health condition. These feelings are normal and in time they will feel better with your help.

The first step in the plan is for you to become an active member of their healthcare team. Your team may include their doctor, diabetes educator, dietitian, pharmacist, social worker and other specialists. You will teach them new skills to help control their blood sugar.

Type 2 diabetes may develop in adults who have one or many of the following:

• are overweight
• have a family history of Type 2 diabetes
• have a history of gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy)
• are physically inactive
• belong to a high-risk ethnic or racial group such as Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
